All’s olive and well with the Mediterranean diet

By   |

Launched today, the Olive Wellness Institute (OWI), an online resource on the nutrition, health and wellness benefits of olive products

Angelo Pricolo, Pharmacy Guild of Australia councillor and AJP contributor says he often talks to his pharmacy customers about the benefits of extra virgin olive oil.

“I regularly advise my customers in the pharmacy to include extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in their diet mainly due to the phenolic antioxidant and squalene properties, and overall benefits it has on cardiovascular health,” said Angelo.

“The OWI is a fantastic resource for the Australian health community and will certainly become a go-to source for pharmacists who want credible information relating to the nutrition, health and wellness benefits of olives and olive products.

“The humble olive has been such an important staple ingredient for a large part of the world’s population. When my parents emigrated from Italy in the 1950s, the only olive oil available was for medicinal purposes and could only be purchased from the local pharmacy.

“The OWI is a fantastic resource for the Australian health community and will certainly become a go-to source for pharmacists who want credible information relating to the nutrition, health and wellness benefits of olives and olive products.”

Ian Breakspear, clinical herbalist and naturopath, educator and author, says there is a myriad of health and wellness benefits from olive products, and regularly recommends them to his patients.

“EVOO doesn’t just have a favourable fat profile, but also a range of other phytochemicals (such as oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol) which positively affect other risk factors in heart disease, including inflammation and carbohydrate metabolism.9 Olive leaf extract has even more of these particular phytochemicals, increasing its potency in various ways.10

“We’ve finally moved past the misleading demonisation of all sources of fat to really understand that moderation and quality are key. High-quality EVOO is not only nutritious but can lower the risk of multiple chronic diseases,11 plus it tastes fantastic,” said Ian.

“We’ve all seen the exaggerated claims and misleading information used to promote the latest health fad. Initiatives such as the OWI can provide both the public and health professionals with access to reliable and valid information, in a single easy to use location.”

Subscription to the olive wellness community is free via the OWI website –www.olivewellnessinstitute.org.
